One aspect of preparing for the bike trip has been coming up with ways to keep myself connected to my friends, family, and the outside world while on the road. We won't have internet access and cell service will be spotty at best.
I always considered myself reasonably internet-savvy, nevertheless it was quite a surprise to me at how much I've learned as I have tapped into services like Twitter and Blogger. Both programs allow you to upload text or pictures from your cell phone, allowing you to reach people all over the world. There are even apps that integrate your Twitter messages to automatically appear on your blog or Facebook. Then of course, you can share your blog posts through Google Reader or RSS Feeds, etc. I don't even come close to understanding how this all works.
I find it ironic that as low-tech as we try to be on this trip (camping out, travelling by bicycle), we will still be relying on technology that I didn't even know existed to communicate with the outside world...
....Or maybe I've been living in a cave this whole time and have just discovered the wonders of Twitter. Either way, it makes for an interesting trip!
