My understanding of our plan (Aug 7)

Our trio will be meeting in Seattle, WA on August 15th and beginning our journey on 2 wheels. Oddly enough our first direction will be north up the Puget Sound coast to catch a series of ferries that will take us through the San Juan Islands and to Victoria, British Columbia where we will spend a day or two riding Vancouver Island and warming up to our loaded bicycles.

From there, we will turn southward and start down the Washington coast on the Olympic peninsula. This is the 'dry' season, but we aren't holding our breath for rainless rides.) The rest of the route is roughly straight south with a 1 week detour to Portland and a potential climbing ride up Mt. Hood to claim our >10,000' bragging rights if we feel up to it.

Once we are back on the Oregon coast it should be smooth sailing down our nation's coastal highways and byways to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and finally San Diego. Other than the main California cities it looks like a few days will be spent in Santa Barbara and an odd one here or there for surfing lessons.

  2. I checked out the Portland detour, depending on the route we choose, it could be 170 miles. If you calculate that this includes bypassing 65 miles of the coastal route, its only 110 mi out of the way. Not so bad.

And Nathan, I don't think there are roads that go to the top of Mt. Hood. Unless you want to bike over glaciers...
